School
History
Southmoor school started
its existence under a very different guise. Between the two world
wars, the forward thinking education chiefs in Sunderland saw
a need for good basic training in the technical arts and crafts
that were required for the heavy industry and the area. Thus
was born in Sunderland junior technical College, based in Villiers
Street.
Following the Second World War, the educational atmosphere was
changing, and the very positive technical direction the school
was moving in, had to be widened in order to accommodate more of
the arts. Because of its popularity, the school started to outlive
the capacity of the old buildings and it was felt that a new, purpose-built
building should be provided. It came about then that the school
was opened on its present site in 1959, called Southmoor school,
but still continuing the ethos of the old junior tech.
The buildings were extended in 1973 and are situated in the extensive
well maintained and very pleasant grounds that they are in now.
Teaching accommodation
consists of two main blocks, with purpose-built extensions that
house the PE and technology blocks.
