Unsuspecting staff and pupils at Southmoor Community School were the victims of a Marshin invasion under the guise of Jeans for Genes.

The science department has become overrun with Marshin babies all seeking asylum in the preparatory room. Science staff were fooled into completing a demonstration that modelled how randomly characteristics can be inherited from both parents. This was to illustrate to pupils why we don’t exactly look like our parents and siblings. A side effect to the ‘marshmallow’ experiment was to repopulate the once endangered species of Marshins, a soft bodied, push pin throwback from the ‘jelly baby’ species.

Pupils around the school were also used to raise funds for a charity devoted to identifying problems with genes to prevent, cure and help children in the UK who suffer from genetic disorders.

Yr 9 pupils baked and sold cookies and cakes. Staff had the opportunity to win a J4G themed cake if the estimated the mass correctly. Science club entertained the whole school in a special J4G assembly. And finally staff and pupils paid £1 each for the privilege to wear jeans!!

In total staff and pupils managed to raise over £1000 which will be donated to the Jeans for Genes Charity and used to prevent any future Marshin invasions.
