Year 9

ShakespeareAs most people are aware, Year 9 is geared towards preparing for the SATs in May. While this
is true, we also see the year as a time of preparation for the more mature study requirements of Year 10 and GCSE. Throughout the year both language and literature skills will be developed with a focus to covering the demands of the three SAT papers: Writing, Reading and Shakespeare. This all covers a massive variety of topics and materials so all teachers have a slightly different approach. Macbeth is the Shakespeare text we use as it is most accessible to pupils of lower ability whilst still offering ample opportunity for higher ability pupils to excel. As with Years 7 and 8 a wide variety of activities are covered so there should be no reason for a lack of stimulation.

• Poetry and figures of speech; similes and metaphors for example.
• Punctuation such as commas, full stops and apostrophes.
• Writing in many forms such as stories, magazine articles or leaflets.
• Focus on using quotations to reinforce points.Literarutre
• Parts of speech such as nouns, verbs and adjectives.
• Oral activities in the form of speeches, radio shows or debates.
• Using good grammar. This can be anything from clauses to correct tense usage.
• Using ICT to present work and improve skills such as spelling.
• Analysing media in the form of a film, magazine or web-page.
• Reading in its many, many forms.
• Any other ideas individual teachers may use.
