English Department

Hello, and welcome to Southmoor School’s English Department. This is our section of the site and as well as giving you plenty of information about the subject, we hope that you will feel as though you get to know us a bit better. Before I go any further I’d better introduce myself and explain why I’m here. I’m what’s known as a “Narrative Voice”; that means I don’t really exist but I do have a personality, which I hope is representative of the EnglishEnglish Department. You see, we teach our pupils that when you write something you should aim it towards your audiene, but who is our audience? Well, we think that most people who are reading this are either children about to join us or parents interested in our school. Then we started thinking about how to make people feel welcome and the answer we came up with was by smiling and that’s what I’m doing now, can you see? You can’t smile if you don’t have a face and you can’t have a face if you don’t have a personality so, “Da dah.” Whether you’re young or old it’s very nice to meet you; we hope you enjoy your visit and have a good look around. If there are any words that you don’t understand, use a dictionary! By the way, did you notice that you’ve learned what a narrative voice is?

Key Stage 3Key Stage 3

As you probably already know, KS3 encompasses three year groups: Seven, Eight and Nine. As a parent or child you are probably only interested in one year at a time so we have treated each year separately. Please click on the button below for the year group that you would like to know about, or use the navigation menu at the top.

Key Stage 4Key Stage 4

Once again, as you probably already know, KS4 encompasses two year groups: Ten and Eleven. Unless there is a problem, which is unusual, each class and teacher work in partnership for a two year period up until the GCSE exams in the summer. Although English is two subjects in one, we are going to look at the course by years as it gives a more realistic reflection of the experience.
