Shiney Row Primary School is located on the outskirts of the city between Washington and Houghton-le-Spring. Until approximately 15 years ago, Shiney Row was a mining village until the local Herrington Colliery closed.
The school occupies a large site to the rear of the main street in Shiney Row – attached is a large playing field in a semi-rural setting.
The school comprises 3 separate buildings – a double storey building built in 1912 which houses KS2 classes, a smaller building of similar era houses KS1 classes and a Nursery Unit built about 30 years ago which accommodates pre-school children. More recently in the Summer of 2008 our reception classes have moved into what was once our Neighbourhood Nursery, which is adjoined to our main nursery building in order to provide a more suitable setting for all of the foundation stage.
The school has in the main two forms of entry per year group however, depending on numbers, one or two year groups may be split. Currently there are 270 children on roll in the main school and 52 in the Nursery part time. There are 18 teachers (including the Headteacher), 2 Nursery Nurses, 6 Teaching Assistants, 1 Non-teaching assistant, 2 Administration Staff and a Caretaker.
We are committed to providing high quality education and we believe that children should show self-discipline commensurate with their age. Presenting children with a challenging and stimulating environment, a variety of teaching styles and setting clear and high expectations, provide the opportunity for them to become active learners with a sense of responsibility.
Parents play an important part in school life. We have a number of parents who have worked alongside children for many years helping in classrooms in all age groups. We welcome parents into school; we aim to develop trusted and informed relationships that benefit all children in school and the community.
