Languages in KS4: Broadening Perspectives

Are you concerned about the number of students taking languages in KS4? Worried about results once coursework goes? Finding many students switched off by the GCSE specification?

This year we are offering MFL teachers the chance to look at alternative courses and to share ideas and resources to promote the value of language learning in a series of informal CPD sessions at St. Aidan's Catholic School and Language College, Sunderland .

At each session teachers already delivering alternative courses or using key resources will present their experience, with plenty of time for questions, contributions from others and sharing ideas; the aim is to promote professional dialogue and mutual support around common issues facing MFL departments.

Sessions will take place the first Monday of each month in term time – details below. All interested teachers are welcome to attend as many sessions as they like. Each event will start at 3.30pm with tea, cake, introductions and informal discussion. A presentation at 4pm will be followed by questions and discussion, concluding at 5.30pm.

INTERCULTURAL UNDERSTANDING AND PRIMARY LANGUAGES
the strand that weaves
Assembly Rooms, Newcastle
Monday 19th May 12.00 – 3.30

A FREE half day session which will explore the ways in which schools can embed intercultural understanding in their primary languages teaching and lend a contextual relevance to their pupils' learning.

During the session we will ;

• examine the KS2 primary languages framework and identify activities
to support intercultural understanding objectives,
• demonstrate the added value of providing a meaningful context for
language learning,
• introduce case studies of local schools with links across the globe,
• give advice and support on how to find a partner school and add a
cultural dimension to language teaching,
• make linkages with community cohesion and diversity agendas,
• outline the pathways for national accreditation for schools with an
international outlook.

Local schools have been invited to present their innovative practice and we aim to compile a useful best practice guide and resource booklet which will be available FREE to all attendees.

The session will be of use to all schools who are currently teaching a modern language at KS2 and KS1 and those schools which wish to give an international perspective to their pupils' learning.
