- Excellence through Partnership

Dear Parent/Guardian
We have now reached a really important stage in our students’ lives. It is a time when you
need to give some careful thought to the path that lies ahead for your child.
This Upper School Courses Booklet is intended to keep you fully informed about what is on
offer with respect to the curriculum at Key Stage 4. It is important, perhaps with a future
career in mind, that the right choices are made.
Each learning pathway has the same core subject areas but has a slightly different selection
of courses both in the core and in the three extension blocks and we have worked hard
to identify which pathway we feel your child is best suited.
The range of the courses now on offer to our students has changed a great deal. There are
now many new courses which lead to vocational qualifications linked to the world of work
and further study at KS5. In particular we have three curriculum themes that move our
students away from the traditional lines of study:-
♦ New Diplomas worth up to 8 GCSE’s.
♦ Young Apprenticeships offering enhanced pathways into certain employment streams.
♦ BETC provision at the Pallion Futures Centre.
We will explain more about these courses and their link to the local labour market at tonight's
information evening.
Whilst we will work hard to meet your son/daughter’s preferred choice of subjects, we cannot
give an absolute guarantee that this will happen for every student. All students will be
interviewed by senior staff to talk through their choices and any concerns they might have.
At this interview a preference sheet will be issued to each student. Please read this
booklet carefully before filling in the preference sheet and returning it to school.
We need to complete this process by Easter, a timetable for this is shown on the next
page. To help us do this we would appreciate it greatly if you could return the preference
sheet as soon as possible.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask for Mrs Clay, Mr Miller or myself and
we will be only too glad to help.
Yours sincerely
Mrs McDonald
