As part of our drive to have pupils cycling to school in the near future I am leading a group of pupils who are going to cycle from Whitehaven to Sunderland (136 miles) over three days. We are raising money for 2 charities'The Noble Harty Foundation who are raising money to build a climbing wall for disabled chidren and 'Butterfly, which is a support group for people with Thyroid Cancer.

The pupils involved are :

Year 8
Jordan Southern
Chris Hewitson
Year 9
Clarke Lawson
Year 10
Nathan Cole
Kieron Hall
Martin Gettins
John Anderson
Dalton Jackson

Many thanks to everyone who has helped and sponsored the boys who took part in what was a memorable and very challenging three days. Particular thanks to Dave Wilkinson for his support during the ride and Marie Robe for and the print room staff for providing the boys with diaries etc.
The Sunderaland cycle project/Blue watch youth centre provided us with invaluable back up and cycling support both technical and much needed dietary. There is no doubt that the pupils would not have been able to complete the ride without their help.

The pupils who completed the challenge of 136 miles in 3 days in very bad weather were quite simply amazing. They showed incredible determination, courage and fitness. They were perfectly behaved at all times, very well mannered and were very supportive of each other in some very hard circumstances. All the staff that took part commented on many occasions what a fantastic group of lads these were.To say I was proud of them would be an understatement. When we Cycled down to the Roker Marina at 6.00pm on Sunday evening to be greeted by lots of parents, relatives and friends all cheering I realised what these very young boys had achieved. There was a group of about 15 men from the Cramlington round table who set off at about the same time as we did on friday and they could not believe that our lads had completed some of the sections without getting off the bike and pushing ( Hartside pass, 4 miles up hill in the wind ) They made a point of speaking to the group and saying how impressed they were. Thanks again to those that have helped and supported. It was a fantastic experience made so by the lads !!.

All completed 136 miles and reached a top speed of 51MPH on a bike descending into Nenthead. !
