The aims of this course are to:-
To develop and extend knowledge and understanding as a foundation for those wishing to study the subject to degree level.
To develop the necessary practical skills and scientific method of working.
To provide the necessary qualifications to enhance employability.
What will I study on this course:-
You will study three units at AS and three at A2-level:
AS
1. Exercise and Training - principles of training, fitness elements of performing, and measuring and recording performance.
2. Social Basis of Sport and Recreation - the current structure of sport in Britain and Europe, and analysis of current issues surrounding the Olympic Games.
3. Enhancing Performance - based on a range of practical activities involving the compilation of a portfolio logging achievement and performance.
A2
4. Global Trends in International Sport - this unit will extend the knowledge you gained in unit 2 by drawing comparisons with world cultures..
5. Refining Performance - building on unit 3, this will refine your knowledge, skills and understanding of practical activities.
6. Scientific Principles of Exercise and Performance - building on unit 1, this will extend your knowledge through the study of energy systems.
Who is this course for?
Anyone who wishes to progress to higher education or who may be contemplating careers in sport and recreation or just wants to engage in an interesting and intellectually stimulating pursuit in company with like minded individuals.
What do I need to get on the course?
5 GCSE's at grade C, one of which must be a Science subject / dual award science or Sports Studies.
During the course you will experience a combination of teaching and learning styles as follows:-
Classroom teaching / Library and Learning Resource Centre Work (timetabled / drop-in) / Information Technology Activity (timetabled drop in) / Directed Work with other Students / Directed private study / Directed study in Learning Centre.
It will be necessary for you to have a set of notes available to you. If notes are needed they will be produced by:
Duplicated handouts / Taking notes in class.
What qualification will I achieve?
An AS Level in Physical Education after one year, or an A Level after two years.
What can I do after the course?
Progression from AS onto the A2 course. After A Level, most students enter higher education to follow a degree course.
