Geography

The Geography Department aims to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to understand and contribute to the world in which they live. We endeavour to make learning a valuable and enjoyable experience and to develop student’s ability to think creatively and critically.

What do we study in the Geography Department?

We are constantly responding to the dynamic nature of the subject especially when there are important events such as natural hazards or global events such as the Fair Trade campaign and the World Cup. We have introduced some cutting edge Geographical topics to our syllabus such as the ‘Geography of Crime' and the Geography of Fashion'. The main topics are as follows:

YEAR 7 Map skills, Exploring England, Rivers, Flooding, Earthquakes and Volcanoes.

YEAR 8 World Sport, Geography of Shopping, Brazil, Coasts, Geography of Crime and Ecosystems.

YEAR 9 Development issues, Comparing Countries, Global fashion, Tourism, Local actions/global effects and Japan

GCSE: We follow the OCR syllabus C which investigates the following topics - Coasts, Rivers, Map skills, Settlement, Natural Hazards, Industry, Development, Agriculture and Decision Making. We do a fieldwork exercise to Doxford International Business Park looking at environmental and location issues.

Sixth Form at City of Sunderland College: We follow the Edexcel A syllabus. Topics studied include Fluvial Hydrology, Coastal Environments, Population, Natural Hazards, Ecosystems, Economic Activity and Development.
