Abigail Hilton

My main inspiration came form the singer of the alternative rock band the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Karen O is known for her unique outfits, which are designed by her friend and personal designer Christian Joy.
Every outfit screams originality, which is one thing I love.
She stands out greatly and shows that she does not care how people see her or what they think of her, which is something I admire. My dress was an attempt at achieving that height of uniqueness and to create something that completely stood out!

I got a lot of inspiration for my garment from 1970s Punk, and also from Vivienne Westwood who influenced a lot of the style of the punk culture.
As 2006 was the 30th anniversary of Punk I felt that my choice of theme was appropriate and also as tartan is a big fashion trend of the current season.

The theme I chose was Victorian Sophistication and I decided to make a corset in that particular style. I chose emerald green satin and black lace as I thought these colours and fabrics would go well together.
Also I added some gold decoration to finish it off. The part of my garment I like most is the back of it, with it laced up at the back, using eyelets and the thin black ribbon. I think it shows the Victorian Sophistication in the garment extremely well.

I got my inspiration from when I visited Africa. Whilst I was there I visited the rich and poorer areas and I was able to see the contrast between both. I then tried to combine the two different cultures through my wall hanging.

The garment, which I designed, has the theme of Victorian Sophistication. I then further developed my ideas focusing on this theme. The typical conventions of a corset style garment included: tight fitting, the emphasis of the small waist, elegant style and big skirts. From this I took the idea of the corset style dress. The colour, which appealed to be most, was a vibrant red. I then decided that black would really stand out against it. The lace was used to further develop the Victorian theme and by using lace I was also able to add texture. To conclude my dress I added a black tie around the waist. I am very pleased with the outcome of my final products as it has turned out really well and really resembles my design sketches.

My inspiration was from an Indian wall hanging and a cushion I have in my house.

The inspiration for my cushion design came from the styles of African culture. I explored the types of patterns used by African tribes and the vibrant colours from African landscapes. The ones that stood out for me were rich oranges and golds that matched with dramatic black. I incorporate my own ideas by choosing black and white animals decorated with black and silver sequins and beads to create a contrast with the rest of my cushion. I am extremely pleased with my final product as it turned out exactly the way I imagined it to be.

For my cushion I based my theme upon ‘Indian Delight’. The main aspect of my cushion is the Indian elephant, the reason why I chose the Indian elephant for my inspiration is because elephants are a traditional and popular symbol to represent my chosen ‘Indian Delight’theme.
