‘Brussels’ for Christmas

The children from the Garden Club decided that they wanted to grow something special for their 2009 Christmas dinner and collectively decided on Brussels sprouts.

25 Garden Club members aged from 4-11 years set the Brussels sprout seeds away early in the spring.  The seeds were watered using the rainwater collected in the water butt located near the poly tunnel.  After the seedlings reached one inch high, they were replanted into three separate vegetable plots.  The plants were carefully tended by club members and also the children from nursery.  All of the hard work paid off as children collected four large containers full of fresh, fab, fat sprouts.

To help our chief ‘Cook’, four club members helped to peel and trim the sprouts which were cooked to perfection on Wednesday 9 December. A massive 215 people had Christmas lunch that was enjoyed by everyone!  Even the sprout trimmings were put to good use – inside of our compost bins.
