Intervention and Assessment Places

In Columbia Grange School there are 5 allocated Intervention places and 5 allocated
assessment places.

Intervention

An intervention place is custom made to meet the individual needs of pupils with a
diagnosis of ASD who are experiencing difficulties in mainstream settings. These
difficulties are often in the areas of:

• Challenging Behaviour
• Inappropriate social interactions
• Curriculum access
• Rigidity of Routines

Intervention is planned to last no longer than 2 terms with the pupil remaining on the
mainstream school role, but spending varied amounts of time, ranging from full time to
specific sessions, at Columbia Grange School.

This allows for qualified and experienced multi-disciplinary staff, to identify the pupils
needs and the strategies required to meet them. It also allows the mainstream school,
where necessary, to undergo a period of detailed training so that staff are able to meet
the identified needs of the pupil.

Returned evaluation forms have shown that 100% of schools and parents rated the
Intervention Placement as very effective.

Assessment

An Assessment Place is designed to allow for a period of detailed multi agency
assessment, it is offered in agreement with the SEN Department, when set criteria have been met. They are temporary and can be in the form of full, part time, or dual
placements.

During the Assessment period an ASD Profile will be completed and curricular targets will be identified. A key part of the multi agency assessment is Parent/carer and pupil
involvement. The place concludes with a multi disciplinary review or in some cases a Full Statutory Assessment.
