Columbia Grange School
• Columbia Grange School is a purpose
built, co-educational school for
children with severe learning
difficulties and/or autism between the
ages of two to eleven years. Currently
86% have a diagnosis of Autistic
Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
• The school has achieved recognised success in the provision of education to pupils with ASD.
• The school provides 70 places for fulltime pupils and also has the flexibility to offer a maximum of 5 assessment and 5 intervention places.
• For the intervention or assessment placements, it acts as a flexible base, whereby children (with ASD) from mainstream schools can attend on a temporary basis, with agreement and approval of the Autism Outreach Team (AOT) and the SEN department.
• An intervention place is offered
following input from the AOT and
the SEN panel. It is custom made
to meet the individual needs of
pupils with a diagnosis of ASD who
are experiencing difficulties in
mainstream settings. This allows
for qualified and xperienced
multi-disciplinary staff, to identify
the pupils needs and the strategies
required to meet them. It also
allows the mainstream school,
where necessary, to undergo a
period of detailed training so that
staff are able to meet the identified
needs of the pupil.
• An Assessment Place is designed
to allow for a period of detailed
multi agency assessment, it is
offered in agreement with the SEN
Department, when set criteria
have been met. They are
temporary and can be in the form
of full, part time, or dual
placements.
• Playgroup sessions for pupils with a diagnosis of ASD, and their parent runs on a weekly basis.
• The school has extremely well qualified and experienced staff that are able to offer support/advice and opportunities for lesson observations.• The school also benefits from having an outreach department, which is staffed by a highly qualified and experienced team of specialists in autism. The school has established itself as a training centre for autism within the city, sharing good practice and delivering training to NVQ level three.
